Human Beings The Ultimate Consumer

Human beings are the ultimate consumers.  We eat, burn up, mine, and destroy every natural resource we've ever had contact with.  Since the existence of the two legged Human being creature, it has used up everything it has come in contact with.  We walked into our mortality first by eating all we came in contact with, then we began burning it up.  First to keep ourselves warm, then to cook the other things we we're eating.  We discovered early that other animals taste better after being roasted over an open fire.  Then we discovered Salt.  And we began mining and consuming every bit of salt we could stuff into our bodies.  Roasted things taste better with salt.

We were, and still are, eating just about everything we have ever come into contact with.  Just like a race of children, we pick a thing up and the first thing we do with it is to stick it in our mouths.  If it tastes good, and we survive, we'll salt it up and roast it over the fire pit, Ugh!..  That's cave man for, "yum."

Along comes the industrial revolution and the stuff we don't eat we make into other things we'll use.  The bye product of this process floats into the atmosphere and we become addicted to the smog we breath.  We are so addicted to this smoggy stuff that we keep making things to send more of it into the atmosphere.  We have become a race of drug addicts expecting to breath in our, "Hit" in every breath.

So we breath, and still kill, everything we come into contact with to either eat, or consume in another manner.  The other creatures on the planet have no defenses against us, because we are so intelligent and smarter than they are.  Heaven help us if the whales decide to fight back.

Douglas Adams made a pretty dire prediction in his book, "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy".  I'm wondering now when the "Vogon Destructor Fleet" decides we're in the middle of their galactic express way.

Maybe we should smarten up and clean up our acts, because it's to late...

Doom and Ice

The deal with world wide climate change is that people forget about the global warning signs of things happening just behind the curtain of events that catch the public eye, like temperature rising or falling, water ways expanding, contracting, or shifting, the desertification of areas quickly that should not be lacking water, and the sudden movement of large quantities of ice.  The later is a cyclical event.  One that is way overdue.

The last great ice age was between 100 thousand and 25 thousand years ago.  The ice pushed well into the continental United States.  It is a misconception that ice covered the entire globe.  That's not true.  However, Ice miles deep pushed south as far as the middle Pacific region just south of Oregon across through the upper part of Wyoming, sort of arches down through lower Massachusetts's, and New York State.  From there the ice thinned out until it reached a more tepid climate.  South America was still fairly warm and the Yucatan was tropical.  Ice covered about 25% of the Earth's surface.

Then about 20 thousand years ago the major jet streams began changing course and warmer air started reaching areas of the planet that hadn't been warm for upwards of 100 thousand years or so.  There may even have been a huge geological event such as an asteroid strike or even more likely a sudden global pole shift that managed to shift the axis of the planet.  Whatever happened, our world began warming back up to more tolerable mammal loving temperatures.

There are some precursors to an impending ice age.  Some of these signs may include, but are not uniquely subject to: The rise in Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which has been rising substantially due to global climate change.  This added CO2 effects the major oceans which in turn effects the ocean currents responsible for bringing warm water north and cool water south and so forth. When the water temperatures of the planet begin changing the atmospheric temperatures which in turn effect the jet streams, (the fast moving rivers of air) traveling around the planet also change.  The end result is a global warming, then super cooling.  Hence we have an Ice Age.

Now, using your advanced powers of observation, take a long look at the state of global warming and or cooling today.  Where in this cycle are we, and do you recognize the symptoms?  I think it's safe to say that we just might be in the throws of impending Doom.  Now what?

Global Warming?

This morning while at school, in the middle of February of all things, there was a tremendous couple of lightening strikes followed by a couple spectacular thunder claps.  The whole building shook.  At first we all speculated that the heating system in the building had just went Boom.  That wasn't it.  We felt the first boom, and I saw the second lightening strike out the window followed by a bigger Boom.  That sort of thing intrigues me.  The science guy in me wakes up and starts thinking.  You can tell because of the smoke that shortly billows out of my ears.

The loudness of the thunder prompted me to call home and check on my Mona.  She isn't thrilled about flashing lightening strikes and huge rocking noise from the sky in mid February.  Usually when there are booms of that size I beginning thinking of large ooops' and explosions occurring in the upper atmosphere.  Ya know that occasional ariel accident.  That was not the case, just thunder.

Thunder and lightening in the middle of February is extremely rare.  Usually the atmospheric conditions don't contribute to weather anomalies that should and do appear during the summer.  This winter however things have been abnormally warm and the conditions are changing.  We had close to 60 degrees in the North Country a day ago and it was 48 degrees when I crawled out of bed at 3:30 this morning.  And they say that global warming isn't really happening.  I would love to see the looks on the faces on a couple of the Powers that Be trying to explain the weather.

There is scientific evidence that supports both theories, that global warming is a natural cycle of the planet, and that global warming is the product of man's negative impact on his environment.  Regardless if it's natural or a mistake or not, global warming is a thing that should be contended with, not ignored.  If we continue to ignore the ramifications of global warming some pretty darn bad things may happen.  Rising of the oceans drowning the coastal cities, the point at which a temperature inversion so catastrophic occurs that life won't be able to maintain a natural body temp. and die, and of course the far out possibility that the atmosphere of the planet becomes toxic to all life.  All possible extremely negative outcomes of the long term effects of global warming.  Isn't that wonderful?

So, this morning while enjoying a moment at school of nothingness, a couple of large boomy noises woke the students from their glum slumbers into an almost alert status.  A very bright white flash followed by another Boom rattled their teeth.  February has been disturbed by the happenings of July or August.  I'm telling you, Global Warming is a Thing man!

Global Weatherizing.

It's the second day in the year 2023, and all's well.  The temperature in Northern New Hampshire is in the 40's a very mild beginning of winter.  The unpredictability of the weather is getting stranger as time progresses leaving me to wonder how we can ignore the warming global temperatures.  As temps. raise the weather gets more and more volatile making storms bigger and bigger.  Is it to late to change, or is human existence on Momma Earth coming to an end?

Global warming's scientific explanations have been scrutinized and argued for years.  Weather or not the reader believes in the causes or effects of global warming doesn't effect the facts that global temperatures are on the rise and the weather is Funky everywhere.

Green houses are nice to have when you're growing vegetables and other plants that don't like snow and ice.  In the winter we can create a nice cozy place for your flowers and other pretty goodies to flourish and mature.  They are pleasant places to visit and actually create a little tiny envelope of oxygen to enjoy and breath deep into starving lungs.  However, a global Greenhouse isn't necessarily the happy place you'd think it to be.

Green House gases collect as temps rise letting sunshine in but not letting the heat escape. Over time that sends the temperature world wide up incrementally.  According to the Paris accords with acceptation of the United States, the major green house creating countries of the world have agreed to keep the rise in global temps. to less than 2 degrees Celsius, that's approximately 35.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The world has reached a 1 degree change already and is closing on 1.5 degrees and we are already beginning to see global adverse effects. A rise of over 2 degrees could be the point of no going back.

The thing about rising temperatures is that they don't rise all in one smooth pattern. There is a swing in temps and energies.  We'll have a warm year or two, then will have a cold year or two.  The temps. go up exponentially which causes an exponential drop that balances out the swing of energy.  So, we might have two or three years of real warm weather then two or three years of real cold weather.  Yuck.

The creation of an ice age is when the temp. in the summer stays below the freezing point for an extended period, and if the world experiences temps. that stay in that range for more than a couple years we're in the throws of an ice age.  So, we have an ice age, hopefully we all survive, probably not, but one can be hopeful. Then we have a few years of uncomfortably warm to hot weather as the energies swing back.  That can cause more mayhem than the previous.  Suddenly the planet is in a swing process that is uncontrollable and becomes unable to maintain life and everything dies.  Unless we've figured out how to leave and find another place to poison.  Doesn't sound real plausible does it?

One of Elon Musk's secret plans for his space craft is just that, to escape.  Thing is, escaping before you've found a place to go might not be the best idea.  So Elon is actually a Super Villain in disguise?  Ya never know.

I would rather just get on with it and save our own little piece of Heaven, clean her up, and learn to get along, but hey what do I know?

Peace and Balance,

John
